ARE YOU DRESSED FOR SUCCESS?

CONSIDER PHR/SPHR CERTIFICATION

PURPOSE OF CERTIFICATION: Certification is an essential tool for maintaining high professional standards. It shows that HR professionals have demonstrated mastery of the HR body of knowledge and accepted the personal challenge to stay abreast of new developments in the human resource field. To be effective in their jobs, HR professionals must know how to deal effectively with human resource strategic planning, international competition, management staffing, and family and social issues that affect the workplace, employee rights, and emerging human resource issues. Certification provides:

  • National recognition of professional achievement.
  • An aid to career advancement.
  • A visual reminder to peers and coworkers of professional achievement through the use of the PHR or SPHR designation on business correspondence and by display of the certificate.
  • THE EXAMINATION: Two levels of certification are available: Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). The PHR examination is generally considered appropriate for HR professionals with two to four years of exempt-level HR work experience and the SPHR is appropriate for those with at least six years of exempt-level HR experience. The PHR exam consists of HR generalist information at the operational/technical level. The SPHR exam addresses HR generalist information at the strategic and policy level.

Each multiple choice exam consists of 200 scored questions plus 25 pretest questions for a total of 225 questions. Each question lists four possible answers, only one of which is correct. Candidates have four hours to complete the examination. Questions are representative of the following functional areas in human resources; the percentages indicate the extent to which each area of knowledge is emphasized at examination level.
